Happy New Year, Barney and Charlie Brown! Chapter 5: Goodbye, Old Year, a Peanuts + Barney & Friends Crossover fanfic
Chapter 5: Goodbye, Old Year
After their musical chairs game, Scooter was still balancing the ball on his nose as he walked by Robert and Hannah. "You're doing good, Scooter!" Robert smiled.
"Just keep it up until midnight!" Hannah smiled as she poured some root beer.
"Oh I will. Thanks!" Scooter smiled as he kept on balancing. "Just two more hours to go."
"Come on, Charlie Brown and Heather! It's almost midnight! I'll pour you both a root beer." Hannah smiled.
"Thanks, Hannah." Charlie Brown said.
"I could sure use the pick me up." Heather said.
"Alright, two hours to go. We can manage!" Sally told herself while grabbing a party horn and blowing into it. "How're you doing?"
"Still up..." Baby Bop yawned.
"Good, we can stay up for midnight!" Sally explained before spotting Linus. "Oh Sweet Babboo." She cooed as she walked towards him.
"It's gonna be a long night..." Baby Bop thought, crawling into the hammock, with her blankey in her hand.
"There you are, Linus! You've been ignoring me, all night!" Sally complained.
"Sorry..." Linus sighed as he and Sally joined Charlie Brown and Heather.
"Hey you two. Root beer?" Hannah asked.
"One please, with two straws." Sally cooed, looking at Linus.
"I'll pass." Linus said.
"Make that ONE straw, then..."
"You know, Charlie, if we both can stay up until midnight, we might end up ushering in the new year together." Heather explained, sipping a cup of root beer with whipped cream.
"You're probably right." Charlie Brown said. "Heather, may I have this-"
"ALRIGHT, PEOPLE! TIME FOR LUCY SAYS!" Lucy bellowed as she blew an airhorn.
"-dance?" Charlie Brown groaned.
"Well, you heard the 'queen'...maybe after the game..." Heather said, wincing a little.
"Wanna play?" Sally asked Linus.
"I'll pass." Linus explained, walking over to the 'balcony'.
"How you doing, Linus?" Barney asked as he joined him.
"I'm feeling good." Linus smiled as Lila came onto the balcony and joined them.
"It's been a great year, hasn't it, Barney?" Lila asked with a toothy smile.
"It sure has been." Barney smiled.
"What do you think, Linus? Do you have any rules for anyone who's wanting a better life in the New Year?" Lila asked.
"Keep the ball low. Don't leave you crayons in the sun. Use dental floss every day. Don't spill the finger paints. Always knock before entering. Don't let the ants get into the sugar. Never volunteer to be a program chairman. Always get your first serve in. And feed your dog whenever he's hungry." Linus listed as Snoopy came out, scarfing down some cookies.
"Will all of that give me a better life?" Lila wondered.
"A better life and a fat dog." Linus joked.
"LINUS!" Lila screamed. "THAT'S IT! I know what I'm putting down for my New Years Resolution! 'Pay close attention to what Snoopy eats'..."
Snoopy ran back inside with shrunken eyes, upon hearing that. "Sounds like someone's not excited." Barney winced.
"What time is it?" wondered Linus.
"10:06." Barney explained.
"Good grief..." Linus sighed.
"Do other people in other countries celebrate New Years too, Barney?" Lila asked curiously.
"Why sure they do! New Years is a fun holiday that's celebrated all over the world! Let's see how other countries celebrate New Years Eve on..." Barney smiled before making the Adventure Screen appear.
"The Adventure Screen!" Lila and Linus happily exclaimed, sitting down together, sharing cupcakes.
"In Portugal, children celebrate New Years by collecting 12 grapes, one for every month of the year, then at midnight, they make a special wish on each grape." Barney explained.
"Wow! That sounds really magical!" Lila smiled.
"And over the way in Norway, the children love to have a special New Years Eve race in the snow, but must finish before the sun sets. Then, when night falls, they put candles in the snow all over their villages to mark the New Year." Barney explained.
"And in Mexico, they fill a piñata with toys and sweets and take turns hitting it." Barney added on.
"Robert was telling me about that! It looks like a lot of fun!" Lila smiled.
"And in Japan, they write cards with greetings for the new year. This way, they stay friends throughout the new year." Barney said. "They also play badminton, fly kites and do face painting."
"Flying kites. Charlie Brown would love that!" Linus said.
"And I love face painting! It's so fun!" Lila smiled.
"In Israel, dipping apples in honey means your new year will be very sweet. They also ask for forgiveness from all their friends in case they've done something to hurt the others' feelings." Barney continued.
"Ooooooh! Linus, I forgive you." Lila said.
"And I forgive you." Linus added.
"In Germany, people dress up and go from house to house collecting treats. They bang pots and pans together and sing a special song." Barney explained.
"How does it go?" Lila asked.
Barney:
Rumble rumble rye, give us apple pie
Cut the pieces thick, the biggest we shall pick
If they are rather small, just give us them all
"Barney, I just had an amazing idea!" Linus said as he, Lila and Barney walked back in the treehouse.
"YOU SNIFFED IN MY ROOT BEER!" Lucy yelled at Snoopy. "CHARLIE BROWN, YOUR STUPID BEAGLE SNIFFED IN MY ROOT BEER!"
"He didn't mean it." Hannah reasoned.
"Come on, you can do it..." Scooter said.
"It's not even 10:15 and you're tired?" Miss Etta wondered.
"Uh huh..."
Peppermint Patty smiled and signaled over to Linus and Lila "Hey you two, whatcha up to?"
"We got a great idea, but we need pots and pans." Linus explained.
"Why?" Peppermint Patty asked before seeing Marcie stumble around a little. "Gotcha!" She said, grabbing her friend's hand. "So why do you need pots and pans?"
"I know what we can do to pass the time!" Linus said, with the biggest smile ever.
"OK! Let's roll with it!" Keesha smirked, gathering enough pots and pans for everyone as they marched throughout the treehouse, and sang the song they learned from Germany.
A half hour later, Robert set up a pinata. "OK! The pinata is up! Who's ready to take a swing?" Robert smiled.
"I'll do it!" Lucy happily exclaimed, getting blindfolded and spun around.
BJ, Barney's Friends, and Peanuts Gang:
Hit it! Hit it! Hit it!
Swing at the piñata.
Hit it, one two three.
Spill the tasty candy.
"AUGH!" Lucy growled as she failed to hit it.
"Who's up next?" Stephen smiled.
"My turn!" Schroeder smiled as he was blindfolded, spun, and began to take a swing.
BJ, Barney's Friends, and Peanuts Gang:
Hit it! Hit it! Hit it!
Swing at the piñata.
Hit it, one two three.
Spill the tasty candy.
Schroeder was able to break it and the piñata spilled it's treats. "Lucky..." Lucy muttered under her breath.
Another half hour later, Charlie Brown and Heather went to the balcony. "Finally, we're alone before midnight." Charlie Brown sighed happily.
"I'm having a really fun time tonight." Heather smiled.
"And it's only 11 at night. We have ample time to cuddle and remember our favorite parts of the year." Heather added.
Charlie Brown's eyes widened. "What if the new year turns out worse than this year? I know I have all of you, but what happens if more bad stuff happens in the new year?"
"Babe, as long as we're all together, we'll pull through whatever we're handed." Heather reassured.
"Good..." Charlie Brown said, resting his head on Heather's shoulder. "Stars sure are pretty, tonight..."
Inside the treehouse, we see Scooter balancing the ball on his nose while sleeping, sparking Lila's curiosity "Such determination..." she whispered.
"Agreed..." Keesha commented. "I can't believe how late we're all staying up."
"Neither can I!" Sally explained.
"Same..." yawned Baby Bop, still nuzzled in the hammock.
"We have to stay awake! It's only 11:15 now but it'll be midnight soon!" Sally fretted.
"We have 45 minutes left..." Franklin explained.
"So we HAVE to stay awake! No matter HOW tired we are!" Sally exclaimed. "DON'T. FALL. ASLEEP!"
"Hmm?" Barney wondered.
"Staying up until midnight is the best thing ever! I don't want any of my best friends to miss it!" Sally added.
Barney smiled "I understand. Why don't we think of some fun games to play, in the new year?"
"I like that idea!" and Sally ran off to get paper and her crayons, waking Scooter from his little nap.
"Whoa! Whoa!" the squirrel kept the ball balance don his nose, nonetheless.
"Lila, I wanna thank you for letting me take you to this party. You showed me that it's OK to miss your friends, but that they'll never truly leave you because friends are forever." Linus smiled.
"Why Linus...that is so sweet..." Lila smiled sweetly before Snoopy turned on the Adventure Screen to show the Times Square Ball with 30 minutes to go.
"Only 30 more minutes till midnight!" Lucy happily exclaimed.
"Oh boy, oh boy! Won't be long now!" Barney bubbled with excitement.
"Grab your partners everybody!" Marcie happily exclaimed.
"Let's get back inside! It's almost time!" Heather squealed with delight as she headed back into the treehouse with her boyfriend.
It was now inching closer to midnight, with only two more minutes till the ball was about to drop, and Scooter still kept the ball on his nose. "Hold on, sugar! Only two more minutes till midnight!" Miss Etta smiled.
"I'm doing great!" Scooter smiled.
Sally sat by herself at the table before Baby Bop approached her, skipping happily. "Did I miss it?" she asked with a smile.
"No! You're just in time!" Sally smiled as everyone gathered around Scooter.
"THIS IS IT! ONE MINUTE LEFT!" Peppermint Patty happily exclaimed.
"The suspense is killing me!" Heather said.
"ME TOO!" Lila cheered.
"30! 29! 28! 27! 26! 25! 24! 23! 22! 21!" the kids began counting down/
"20! 19! 18! 17! 16! 15! 14! 13! 12! 11!" everyone grabbed party hats, noise makers and clappers while Barney used his magic to make a plate of grapes appear.
"10! 9! 8! 7! 6!" the tension was getting tense.
"Final five!" Peppermint Patty called out.
"5! 4! 3! 2! 1!" everyone was shouting, at this point.
With that, Scooter finally bounced the ball off his nose, letting it drop to the ground as midnight finally stroke! "HAPPY NEW YEAR!" Everyone happily exclaimed as noise makers were blown and confetti fell everywhere!
"I DID IT! I DID IT! I DID IT!" Scooter happily exclaimed.
"HAPPY NEW YEAR, CHARLIE BROWN!" Heather happily squealed before Charlie Brown silenced her with a kiss.
"This is exactly where I wanted to be." Charlie Brown flirted.
Barney's Friends and Peanuts Gang:
Should auld acquaintance be forgot
And never brought to mind?
Should auld acquaintance be forgot
And days of auld lang syne? (old long since)
For auld lang syne, my dear
For auld lang syne
We'll take a cup o' kindness yet
For auld lang syne
"Alright everbody! It's midnight, I have the grapes, so I'm gonna make the first wish." Barney announced. "I wish everyone in the world can become friends."
"AWWWWW..." the kids, animals, and dinosaurs smiled as Barney ate one grape and handed the next one to Charlie Brown.
"And I wish for peace and happiness everywhere." Charlie Brown smiled. Just then, Snoopy played a special song to help ring in the new year.
